Ducati 916

Back when we initially started playing with these, we set the cam timing to the std specs. This produced results that most owners raved about. While the power increases on the dyno were not great, as seen in the first chart below, response was the most mentioned improvement. The report for the first bike we did contained a multi gear wheelie that didn't want to end, according to the owner. One advantage of this is that the std eprom will suffice, cutting the cost of the mod. The std curve is green, the improved curve red.

Since then, we have done other bikes with different specs that have produced more hp all through the rev range. This does bring with it the need for an adjustable eprom. Most 916s we see have adjustable eproms anyway, so this is not so much of an issue.

The curve below shows one such bike. As usual for these mods, response, smoothness and horsepower were all improved. This bike is one I remember as being particularly nice to ride. It was fitted with Skorpian ( now Akropovic ) mufflers as opposed to the usual Termis. Again, the std curve is green, the improved curve red.

Another mod open to 916 and 748 owners is the removal of the flywheel outer weight. The flywheels on these bikes have an inner hub which is used as part of the starting system, and a bolted outer weight for mass. Removing the outer mass will let the engine respond more rapidly than standard. This mod is probably not suitable for a bike used for tooling around the suburbs or regularly carrying a passenger. On a bike used mainly for sports riding, it is another simple mod that can be easily reversed should you wish.

This mod is also open to ST2 and ST4 owners, which would be an example of a good idea applied badly.
